Mary Theresa Vande Casteele was born on September 6, 1861 in Moerkerke, West Vlaanderen, Belgium, the fourth child of Louis Vande Casteele and Marie Teresa Van De Wiele.  As a child Mary lived with her parents in Moerkerke, West Vlaanderen, Belgium where her father had been born.  On June 4, 1867 at the age of 5 Lucy arrived in New York with her family.  By 1870 the family was living in De Pere, Wisconsin.  In 1880 Mary was living in the Village of DePere with her parents and brother, Edward.

On April 8, 1881, the 19 year old Mary married Mathias Martens, the 20 year old son of Gerard Martins and Gertrude Johannson in De Pere, Wisconsin.  In 1900 Mary, her husband Mathias and their then nine children were living in the Township of Coleman in Marinette County, Wisconsin.  Mathias was a store keeper and their son, Aloyisus, was working as a clerk in the general store.

In 1910 the family was still living in the Village of Coleman where Mathias was the proprietor of a retail store.  Three (Louis, Raymond, & Charles) of the eight children who were living with Mary & Mathias were working as salesmen for the retail store.

The situation had not changed much in 1920 with the family still living in Coleman with Mathias the retail merchant of a general store.  Sons George & Charles, who were living with Mary & Mathias were salesmen at the store.  Also living with the family at that time were daughters Elizabeth & Ester, son Clement and Mathias' brother Will.

In  1922 Mary & Mathias' 37 year old son, Edward, passed away after an attempted emergency surgery at St. Vincent's Hospital in Green Bay for perforations of the stomach.  Edward left behind his wife and four children.

In early 1925 Mary started being treated for a heart ailment in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, where her daughter, Florence, lived with her husband, Ben Simono.  On April 14, 1925 Mary Theresa died at her daughter's home in Two Rivers.  She was 63 years old.

Mrs. Martens was sixty-three years old last September. She was born in Belgium and came to this country at the age of five, with her parents, who settled at DePere. She was married forty-four years ago this month to Mathias Martens at De Pere, coming to Coleman about twenty-eight years ago.
