Lucy Vande Casteele was born on September
24, 1859 in Moerkerke, West Vlaanderen, Belgium, the third child of Louis Vande
Casteele and Marie Teresa Van De Wiele. As a child Lucy lived with her
parents in Moerkerke, West Vlaanderen, Belgium where her father had been born.
On June 4, 1867 at the age of 7 Lucy arrived in New York with her family. By
1870 the family was living in De Pere, Wisconsin.
In 1880, the 20 year old Lucy was living
with her sister Rosalia, & brother in law, John Roffers along with their
daughter Cecelia. John was a grocer and Lucy was working as a grocery
clerk.
On April 16, 1890 Lucy married the widower
brick maker, Henry Albers, at St. Boniface Church in De Pere, Wisconsin.
Henry's first wife, Helena Roffers, had died the previous year. Henry &
Helena had one son, George.
Henry & Lucy's first child, a son, Hubert
Louis, was born in 1892 and a daughter, Florence, followed in 1895. In
1900 the family, including George from Henry's first marriage, were living in
Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin, where Henry was working as a brick yard foreman.
Eleven borders, who were laborers in the brick yard, were also living with them.
By 1910, Henry, Lucy, George, H. Louis, & Florence were living on a small farm
in De Pere. George & H. Louis worked as brick makers in a brick yard while
Henry gardened. In 1920 Henry & Lucy were still living in De Pere, and
living with them were their daughter, Florence, and her husband Raphael Terrien.
On May 13, 1929 Lucy suffered a stroke
which put her into a coma. She lingered for four days before succumbing on
May 17, 1929. She was buried from St. Boniface and was laid to rest in
Mount Calvary Cemetery in De Pere, Wisconsin.
