Theodore Smits was born on January 26, 1881 in Holland, the first child of Matthijs Smits and Maria Catharina Lichterfeld.  He was named for Matthijs' father, also Theodore.  Shortly after Theodore was born, the family of three immigrated to Brown County, Wisconsin in 1883, where his sister, Catherine, was born in Hobart. 

In 1910 Theodore was living with his parents and siblings Henry & Maria.  Theodore was working as a farm laborer.

Theodore died on March 15, 1944 at the age of 63 in Green Bay, Wisconsin from hypertensive cardio vascular disease with terminal cerebral hemorrhage.
