Henry Smits was born in August 1890 in Brown County, Wisconsin, the fifth child of Matthijs Smits and Maria Catharina Lichterfeld who had come to the United States in 1883.  In 1900 the family was living on a farm in the Town of Lawrence. 

 

Henry served with the 18 Infantry Division Company G, which became part of the 1st Expeditionary Division in a reorganization.  It is believed that he was wounded in battle and died at a military hospital in Limoges, Haute Vienne, France on October 23, 1918 and is buried in Plot A Row 11 Grave 28 of the Suresnes American Cemetery, Suresnes, France under the name of Henry Smith.
