Hattie Smits was born on March 24, 1881 in Ashwaubenon,
Wisconsin, the third child of Jacob Smits & Christina
Baeten. In October 1888 Hattie's father purchased land which would become
the Smits farm in Ashwaubenon and moved the family there. When Hattie was
12 years old, Christina, her mother, died from complications from childbirth
leaving the family to be raised by Jacob and probably his elder daughters, Dora
& Hattie. By 1900
the family was living on the Smits' farm including Peter Mathey, the husband of
Hattie's oldest sister, Dora.
On October 11, 1904 the 23 year
old Hattie married 25 year old Victor Joseph Borman, the son of Henry
Borman & Hortense Lhost at St. Boniface Church, DePere, Wisconsin.
They had their first child, Harvey, in 1905, followed by Florence in
1907 & Alma in 1909. In April 1910 the family was living on Cedar
Street in Green Bay, Wisconsin where Victor was working as a wagon
driver for a brewery.
On September 1, 1916 the 35 year old
Hattie died leaving behind her children ages 11, 9 & 7. She was buried from St.
Peter & Paul's Church in Green Bay and is interred in Allouez Catholic Cemetery,
Allouez, Wisconsin.
